The inaugural Caster Semenya Golf Day – in aid of the Caster Semenya Foundation – was held at Glendower Golf Club on the 30th November. Over 80 players took part, each receiving a goodie bag which included Nike attire and a signed copy of Semenya’s recently released autobiography ‘The Race To Be Myself’.
On display for players to enjoy, were Semenya’s numerous major championships medals, including her London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Gold Medals, as well as special memorabilia gathered throughout her glittering career. Semenya was also in attendance, even taking a few swings of the club as well.
A special feature of the day was a sports memorabilia auction, including signed items from Kylian Mbappe, Chelsea FC, PSG FC, Rory McIlroy and Victor Wembanyama.
MC for the event was renowned South African comedian Eugene Khoza, who added his unique energy and style to both the pre-dinner Q&A with Semenya as well as the auction itself.
The Caster Semenya Foundation works with young athletes, providing bursaries for education as well as specialised athletics training and mentoring from Semenya as well as wife Violet Raseboya. Semenya is passionate about developing the next generation of athletes and young South Africans, and providing opportunities, facilities and life experiences that may otherwise not be available to them. Her message is always love yourself and be true to who you are, and as she says of the foundations work ‘First you develop the human, then you develop the athlete, and then you develop the leader’.
The golf day will become an annual fund raiser for the foundation and aims to become a leading charity event on the global golfing calendar.
