At the u/20 World Athletics Championships in Poland, Gift Leotlela demonstrated why he is one of the most exciting young athletes in South Africa at the moment. Having overcome the disappointment of finishing 4th in the 100m earlier in the week, he kept his composure in the 200m finishing second in a time of 20.59. “I believed I could win a medal at these championships and after the 100m where I ran a PB in the semi-finals, I was determined to do well in the 200m” said a satisfied Leotlela. His teammate and tanning partner Clarence Munyai posted the fastest time coming into the final of the 200m, but in a close race finished 4th.
Other Agency athletes also performed well over the 6 day event. Taylon Bieldt, broke the SA u/20 record in the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles with a 13.35 performance, putting her into the top 8 overall. In the 400m hurdles Gezelle Magerman ran a personal best time of 57.75 in the heats earning her a semi-final spot.
Lee-Roy Newton, group MD, was very happy with the maturity shown by these young athletes and is excited about the journey ahead “Our athletes showed great poise under pressure at these championships and the results speak for themselves. This is a good foundation to work from and with more international experience I think they can all achieve even greater success”.
