Gift Leotlela’s dream of becoming an Olympic athlete came true yesterday as he ran a personal best 20.47s in the 200m at the Southern Africa Junior Championships in Lusaka, Zambia to qualify for the Rio Games. He now joins his friend and fellow Newton Agency client Clarence Munyai in becoming the only two junior track athletes to qualify for Rio so far.
Munyai, who ran an Olympic QT at the SA Senior Championships earlier this year, underlined his talent and potential with a 20.45 OQT in the heats of the 200m in Lusaka. Another Agency client, Giselle Magerman, the Youth Olympic Games gold medallist, also put in a solid performance at the championships to win gold in her favourite event, the 400m hurdles.
“We love developing young talent at the Agency, and so it’s wonderful to see how well these three junior athletes have performed in Zambia. I also don’t think people realize how big an accomplishment it is for a junior athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games; the performances of both Gift and Clarence are outstanding and Newton Agency looks forward to guiding them through their first Olympic Games in August” said Lee-Roy Newton, group MD.
