On a blustery, chilly night in Durban at the Newton Classic Qualifiers, Daniel Ebenyo (Kenya) showed incredible determination and heart in the 5000m. Needing to run sub-60s in the last 2 laps, Ebenyo kicked hard and crossed the line in 13:12.10s – an Olympic Qualifying time.
Also attempting to qualify for Tokyo was Caster Semenya. In only her third 5000m ever she bettered her own PB by 20s but fell just short of the automatic qualifying standard of 15:10.00. Glenrose Xaba was second, dipping under the 16min mark for the first time.
