Olympic long jump silver medalist Luvo Manyonga opened his season in the best possible way with an African All-Comers’ record breaking jump of 8.46m in Bloemfontein yesterday evening. His last jump of the evening saw Manyonga post an incredible 8.72m but he was shown the red flag after a slight overstep. “I’ve been working really hard to fix a few things from last year, especially my landing, and it seems to have worked,” a happy Manyonga said.
There was also drama on the track, when, after beating 400m WR holder Wayde van Niekerk, in a cruel twist of fate Gift Leotlela was denied an official time in the 100m after the timing device failed. Hand times gave him a 10.0 which would have been a new South African junior record.
